Is a Hall of Fame Page Effective for Monetizing Free Apps or Just Cringe?

I'm a computer science student developing a free offline PDF tool. I dislike it when basic functions like merging or splitting files are paywalled, so I'm not charging for my tool yet. However, there are costs associated with domain and hosting that I need to cover. I was recently banned from a donation platform because their bots flagged my tool as risky, which left me without any support. To try and generate some donations, I created a 'Hall of Fame' page on my website. The idea is that anyone who donates gets to have their profile picture and link displayed as a sort of tribute, with tiered options: $15 for a standard link and $50 to be featured at the top as a 'legend.' I'm wondering if this kind of model actually works – do people care about back links or seeing their name on a developer's site? Or does it just come off as desperate? Currently, my Hall of Fame is blank with no contributors, and I'm starting to have doubts about the whole idea. I'd love to hear from other indie developers who might have tried this to monetize a free tool.

I've seen smaller open-source tools do similar things, and it can work depending on your audience. For a free app, it's a big gamble, especially since it's empty right now. But if you manage to get a few early donations, even from friends or family, that might help break the ice. Maybe offer them a small mention as a thank you? The backlink idea could actually appeal to small business owners who want visibility, so it’s worth trying out for a month or two before writing it off completely!

Definitely try to get some friends to help fill it out! Even a small amount could give it more appeal.
