How Can I Make My Late 2013 iMac Last Longer?

I have a Late 2013 iMac 27-inch running macOS Catalina 10.15.8, but it's starting to struggle with updated software like Google Chrome, meaning some websites aren't accessible anymore. I'm looking for advice on how to breathe new life into my old iMac using its existing monitor. Is there a way to upgrade or patch it to make it function better, as if it were a newer model? I'd appreciate any simple explanations or suggestions!

Your iMac does have a feature called "target display mode," which lets it be used as a monitor, but it only works with similar older Macs. Unfortunately, there's no known way to connect it to a modern Mac mini. A solid option to consider is using the OpenCore Legacy Patcher to install a newer macOS version. It could really help keep your system running smoother! Check out this link for more info: [OpenCore Patch Guide](https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/)

I found a video that talks about using AirPlay with some lag, it's worth watching if you want an alternative option! Here's the link: [YouTube Video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QG8aToiGMs)

Honestly, your iMac is over a decade old, and most developers have moved on to newer versions of macOS, so find that frustrating. If you really want to upgrade, you might end up needing to buy a new device. That's really the most effective way to ensure compatibility with the latest apps and features, rather than trying to squeeze life out of this older machine.

I appreciate your input! It’s tough facing the reality of needing a new device, but I just want to maximize the lifespan of what I have.

If you're looking to use your old monitor with newer tech, you might have to keep your expectations realistic. While you can't turn your iMac into something brand new, using a lightweight Linux distribution could give it a second life, and it's pretty user-friendly! That's an approach some users have taken successfully. Plus, newer hardware like SSDs can speed things up a lot, if you don't mind diving into some hardware tweaks!

Sounds like you're hoping to get more out of your older iMac! If Chrome is giving you issues, it might be time to switch browsers. Firefox offers Extended Support Release versions that could keep you going longer. For performance boosts, consider upgrading the RAM—pop off the back panel and you can add up to 32GB! I did the same on my 2017 iMac and it made a significant difference. Also, swapping in a faster SSD for your hard drive can work wonders! Just keep in mind the prices for RAM and SSDs have gone up a bit lately.
