I'm considering upgrading from my Ryzen 5 5600X to the 5500X3D for gaming purposes, but I'm unsure if it's a good value. The 5500X3D is priced at $175 right now. I don't do any rendering or editing, just gaming. Other options like the 5700X3D and 5800X3D are pretty hard to find and usually cost around $350. Additionally, moving to AM5 is not an option for me due to the high cost of DDR5 memory. Just to give some context, my current setup includes a 5600X, 32GB of 3600MHz RAM, and an RTX 3080 Ti. Would the performance boost be worth the investment?

For what it’s worth, the enhanced GPU cache on the 5500X3D shines in CPU-intensive games. For instance, I got a huge frame rate increase in Final Fantasy XIV with a 5800X3D—went from 20fps to 80fps in crowded areas. Just keep in mind that performance boosts can vary widely from game to game.
Honestly, I upgraded to the 5500X3D from a 3600, and while it does offer something like 10-20% improvement in very CPU-heavy scenarios, the main boost was in the lows during gameplay. Stuttering was much less frequent! Just keep in mind that I didn’t run any formal benchmarks before my upgrade, so take that with a grain of salt.
If you're into CPU-intensive games, then the 5500X3D could definitely be a decent upgrade, especially after updating your motherboard's BIOS. You could even sell your 5600X to help fund the new chip.
The upgrade gives you about a 10-15% performance bump, but honestly, I don't think it's worth it unless you really need those extra frames. Most games won’t show much difference at 1440p, maybe just 5% more FPS compared to your current setup.
Honestly, I’d be cautious with this upgrade. While the 5500X3D is cheaper and decent, you might find comparable performance with the 5800XT for less. I’d recommend checking out some comparison videos to see how they stack up; many show the 5800XT performing quite well, especially when looking at 1% lows. If I were you, I’d consider saving for a better graphics card or even an OLED monitor before doing the CPU swap.

Yeah, it really depends on the games you're playing and how CPU-bound they are. For the most part, the performance gains aren’t as noticeable in higher resolutions.
