How Does ChatGPT Know My Location Without Me Logging In?

I recently had a chat with ChatGPT about stuffed toys and where to donate them, but I didn't log in. During the conversation, it somehow mentioned my small city, which I found concerning since I never disclosed my location. When I asked how it figured it out, the AI insisted it was just a mistake and that it doesn't track IP addresses or remember previous chats. Is there anyone who can explain how this might happen, especially since I always use a VPN?

Absolutely! I've noticed something similar with other apps too. They might not save your IP directly but can still pull location data when you're using their services. Just a heads up, always changing your VPN could help, but it’s not a full-proof solution against location tracking.

Yeah, I read that they do collect IP addresses to estimate your location, which can sometimes lead to specific city mentions. It’s designed to avoid giving crazy suggestions, like a service in Zimbabwe when you’re clearly in another country. So while they might claim they don't track data, it's a bit more complicated than that.

It's pretty wild how much personal data we unknowingly give up. AI tools can often estimate your location based on your IP address, and even if you're using a VPN, it's not always foolproof. They might not save previous chats, but they can still derive where you're connecting from. So even without logging in, they can get a general idea of your location.
