Which CPU Should I Choose for My Gaming Setup?

Hey everyone! I'm trying to choose between the Ryzen 7 5700X and the 5700X3D for my current gaming setup. My buddy told me that the X3D is really only good for 1080p gaming and that it might not perform well at 2K. Is that true? I'm not too familiar with these processors, so I'd love some advice!

Here's my build:
* GPU: Radeon RX 9070 XT
* Current CPU: Ryzen 5 5600G (it's been holding me back)
* Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix B550-A Gaming
* RAM: DDR4
* Monitor: MSI 27" 1440p OLED
* Cooling: NZXT Kraken 360 AIO

With a strong GPU like mine, would the 3D V-Cache on the 5700X3D make a significant difference for 1440p gaming? Or would the 5700X be a better bang for my buck? Thanks for your help!

You're spot on about your setup needing the 5700X3D to fully utilize your Radeon RX 9070 XT. It's true that some games can bottleneck at that level, but overall the X3D keeps pace nicely. The 5700X may be okay, but it’s not ideal for 1440p gaming with that GPU. You want to ensure smooth performance, especially if you're using any upscaling features.

Exactly! If you push your settings up, you'll really start to feel the limits of the 5700X.

Yeah, your friend is mistaken about the X3D being limited to 1080p. For 1440p, the 5700X3D really shines, especially in demanding games. If you want high settings for 120fps and above in newer titles, the X3D is the way to go. The 5700X will struggle more at that resolution.

Your friend is a bit off. I recently made the leap from a 5700X to a 5700X3D while gaming at 4K with a 4070, and the improvement was substantial! The 1% lows improved a lot, and my average framerates went up by about 5-10% across different titles. If you can grab the 5700X3D, it’s basically the best on AM4 right now since the 5800X3D prices are ridiculous.

Just a heads-up, it looks like the 5800X3D is making a comeback as an "anniversary edition," possibly priced around $300. Depending on whether you have 32GB or 16GB of DDR4, consider your options. If you can switch to an AM5 X3D bundle, selling your current parts might get you a decent deal. It's all about balancing out cost and performance for your needs!

Definitely go for the 5700X3D! Even at 1440p, you’ll notice smoother framerates and less stuttering. Your friend seems to be mistaken; the X3D is not just limited to 1080p. It performs really well in CPU-heavy games no matter the resolution, especially with your 9070 XT. Plus, it's a more future-proof choice than the 5700X.
