Should I Be Worried About Letting a Stranger Charge Her Phone on My Laptop?

While at a café, I let a girl charge her phone using my laptop, and now I'm a bit concerned about malware or potential data theft. I didn't see her interacting with my laptop; she just plugged her phone in and sat back down. I don't have sensitive information on my laptop—mainly just games and schoolwork—but I'm unsure if I should be worried about security or malware. How can I ensure my laptop is safe?

No major concerns here! It's way harder than it seems to hack someone through a phone charging connection. Unless she was actively trying to access your files, which seems unlikely, you should be just fine. Just keep your programs updated and run routine scans. That's basic security practice!

Thanks for the tips! I'll start running scans regularly.

That makes sense, I feel a lot better hearing that.

Honestly, it sounds like you're safe. If you didn't see her accessing any files, you should be okay. Just make sure to run checks occasionally for your own peace of mind. Also, consider getting a portable charger for next time to avoid such situations!

That’s a good idea! I definitely need to be better prepared.

Portable chargers are super handy, especially in cafés!

You'll most likely be fine. Although people usually think USBs are a major hacking vector, the reality is more complicated. Unless that girl had some advanced hacking gear or technical knowledge—which seems unlikely—she probably wasn't able to access your files. Just keep an eye on any weird behaviors from your laptop. But hey, if you're still feeling uneasy, running a virus scan can’t hurt!

Thanks for the reassurance! I definitely plan on running a scan just to be safe.

Right? It’s good to stay vigilant but also not freak out unnecessarily.

You're probably good! The phone usually controls whether it's just a charging connection or can access files. If it was just charging, she shouldn't have been able to access your data without some authorization. If you're really concerned, a quick virus scan will clear your mind!

Good to know! I didn't think about the phone's control over the connection.

Right? Most phones won’t just jump into file transfer mode without prompting.
