How can I tell if my external HDD is failing?

I've got a Samsung M3 portable external HDD and recently ran a test using HD Tune. It showed a "Calibration Retry Count" warning, and the threshold was at 10. However, when I checked with CrystalDiskInfo and similar software, it reported the status as good without any errors. I also tried other tests like SeaTools, which it passed. I'm wondering what steps I should take next and if there's any way to potentially fix this issue before it gets worse.

It sounds like your HDD might be showing early signs of failure. I recommend sharing the complete SMART data for a better diagnosis. Also, since your drive is quite old, it’s a good idea to back up any important files now, just to be safe. Better to be cautious! You can check out Seagate’s guide for more details on optimizing your HDD performance.

Yeah, definitely back up everything! Hard drives can fail without much warning, especially after years of use.

If you have a screenshot of the SMART values, sharing that would help! The Calibration Retry Count might not be a dealbreaker, but it can indicate underlying issues. Keeping an eye on it is smart, and don't forget to run regular backups!

For sure! Even if it seems fine now, better safe than sorry with backups.
