What CPU, RAM, and GPU should I choose for a 1440p gaming and VR PC?

I'm building my first PC, and it will be used exclusively for gaming. I mostly play single-player RPGs and simulators such as Assetto Corsa, Microsoft Flight Simulator, and Elite Dangerous. I'm aiming for 1440p rather than 4K, but I'd also like enough performance to get into VR simulation games. I won't be using the computer for work, streaming, rendering, or AI tasks. A nearby Micro Center has several component bundles and prebuilt systems, so I'm trying to figure out what hardware makes the most sense for my needs.nn1. For the CPU, would a Ryzen 5 7500X3D or Ryzen 7 7800X3D be sufficient, or is it worth spending more on a Ryzen 7 9800X3D?n2. Several bundles include 32GB of DDR5-6000 CL36 memory, but I can get DDR5-6000 CL30 memory for about the same price. Is the lower latency worth choosing, especially since I prefer non-RGB RAM?n3. For the graphics card, should I choose an AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT, spend more on an Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti, or go all the way up to an RTX 5080 for 1440p gaming and VR?

If both kits are DDR5-6000 and 32GB, choose the CL30 kit when the price is similar. Lower CAS latency is technically better, although the difference between CL30 and CL36 won’t be dramatic in everyday gaming. Since you also prefer no RGB, the KLEVV kit sounds like the better fit as long as it’s compatible with the motherboard and has reasonable timings.

The RX 9070 XT makes the most sense for a value-focused 1440p build. It offers performance close to the RTX 5070 Ti in traditional rendering while usually costing less. The 5070 Ti is more appealing if you specifically care about Nvidia features, stronger ray tracing, or DLSS. An RTX 5080 is mainly worthwhile for 4K or extremely high refresh-rate gaming; it’s probably unnecessary for your target resolution unless your VR headset has a particularly demanding display.

For this kind of build, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is still a very strong choice and should handle 1440p gaming and simulation titles comfortably. The 9800X3D is faster, but the real-world difference probably won’t justify the extra cost unless you’re chasing very high frame rates. The 7500X3D is also worth considering if it lets you put more money toward the graphics card, and you can upgrade the CPU later if needed.

A Micro Center 7800X3D bundle can be a good deal, especially if it includes a suitable AM5 motherboard and 32GB of memory. Just make sure the power supply, cooling, case airflow, and graphics card are also up to the demands of VR. For simulator games, especially flight simulators, CPU performance and a fast GPU both matter, so putting the savings from the 5080 into a quality power supply or a better VR setup may provide more benefit.
