I just assembled a new PC with an Intel Core i9-14900KF, Gigabyte Z790 AORUS ELITE AX motherboard, 32 GB of DDR5 memory, and two Samsung NVMe drives. The motherboard shows a steady orange diagnostic light, and I have already tried the RAM in different slots and reseated the CPU. The system only produces a black screen, and I'm wondering whether the BIOS needs an update for this processor. I also noticed a flashing red light on the Samsung NVMe drive with the built-in heatsink. There is currently no graphics card installed because I planned to move my RTX 2080 over after confirming that the new system worked. What should I check first, and how can I update the BIOS without getting a display?

The 14900KF does not include integrated graphics, so the motherboard’s video outputs cannot produce an image. You need to install a dedicated graphics card, such as your RTX 2080, before you can get a display or enter the BIOS. The 14900K would include integrated graphics, but the KF model does not.
A dedicated GPU is required with this processor, whether you use the computer for gaming or simply need video output. The orange diagnostic light may indicate a separate memory or startup issue, so check the motherboard manual for the exact LED label after installing the GPU. The SSD’s activity light by itself does not necessarily mean there is a fault.
Install a graphics card and connect the monitor to the card rather than the motherboard. Once you have a display, you can check the BIOS version and update it if necessary. Depending on the exact motherboard revision, its Q-Flash feature may also allow a BIOS update from a USB drive without a working display.
I didn’t realize the KF model had no integrated graphics. This is my first CPU without onboard graphics, so I’ll move the RTX 2080 over from my old system.
