I'm deciding whether to keep my current AM4 system or move to a new AM5 platform. My current build has a Ryzen 7 5800XT, an ASUS RTX 4070 Super OC, an MSI MAG B550 Gaming Plus motherboard, 32GB of DDR4, a 2TB Gen4 NVMe SSD, and a 650W power supply.
I mainly play competitive FPS games such as Valorant, CS2, Apex, and Warzone at 1080p and 240Hz, although I'm considering moving to 1440p at 240Hz. I also stream through OBS and want consistently high frame rates with good stream quality and minimal performance loss. Budget is not a major concern, and I'd ideally like the next system to last five to seven years.
The upgrade I'm considering includes a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, an X870E motherboard such as the MSI MPG X870E Carbon WiFi, 64GB of DDR5-6000 CL30 memory, and a 1000W ATX 3.1 power supply. I would reuse the RTX 4070 Super for now and replace it later when the GPU becomes the limiting factor.
Would you make this upgrade now, stay on AM4 longer, or consider an intermediate CPU upgrade? Is the X870E Carbon worthwhile, or would a less expensive board be a better choice?

If you do build AM5, I would avoid spending heavily on the motherboard unless you specifically need its connectivity, expansion slots, storage support, or networking features. An X870E Carbon is a premium board and won’t make the CPU faster than a good, less expensive X870 or B850 model.
A 9800X3D, a reliable board with the features you actually need, 64GB of DDR5-6000 CL30, and a quality power supply would be a sensible combination. Put the money saved on the motherboard toward the future GPU instead.
There are two reasonable paths. If you want maximum competitive-game performance now and budget is genuinely unimportant, the AM5 build is a strong long-term foundation. If you’re mainly playing at 1440p with the 4070 Super, however, the GPU will often matter more, so keeping AM4 until the next graphics upgrade is also perfectly sensible.
For a five-to-seven-year plan, AM5 gives you a newer upgrade path, but no platform can guarantee that you’ll never want to replace parts during that period.
For your current GPU and especially at 1440p, the RTX 4070 Super will usually be the limiting component before your AM4 platform is. A 9800X3D would improve CPU-limited competitive games and potentially improve frame-time consistency, but the jump probably won’t justify replacing the motherboard and memory immediately.
If you want to keep the current system going, an AM4 gaming CPU upgrade could be a much cheaper stopgap. Otherwise, wait until you are also ready for a substantially faster GPU, then move to AM5 as a complete platform upgrade.
The move to a 9800X3D can be noticeable in CPU-heavy esports titles, particularly for minimum frame rates, but it won’t transform every game. Since OBS can use the RTX GPU’s hardware encoder, streaming does not automatically require an expensive high-core-count CPU.
If you are satisfied with your current performance, staying on AM4 is reasonable. A compatible X3D chip would be a drop-in upgrade, although the improvement over your existing processor will depend heavily on the games and settings you use.
I’m also running Discord and several other applications while streaming, so 64GB is appealing to me even if it isn’t necessary for gaming alone.

That makes sense. My main reason for considering the upgrade is consistent 240Hz performance while streaming, but I can reuse the 4070 Super until a future GPU upgrade makes the platform change more worthwhile.
