I'm putting together a gaming PC that will also handle engineering office applications and 3D modeling for civil engineering. My total budget is about $1,000, although I could stretch it by another $100–$200 if that would make the system significantly better and more reliable for the next four or five years. I'm planning on using 32GB of RAM, either DDR4 or DDR5 depending on the platform. I already have a Mi A27Qi 2026 monitor, speakers, keyboard, and mouse, so the budget is just for the computer itself. What CPU and GPU combination would give me the best balance of performance and value?

For the graphics card, a 16GB Radeon RX 9060 XT or GeForce RTX 5060 Ti would be reasonable targets. The Radeon paired with a Ryzen 5 9600X is a good all-AMD option, while an Intel Core Ultra 250K-class processor with the RTX card would also work well. Spending an extra $100–$200 on the GPU makes sense if it helps you reach a 16GB model.
For a DDR4 build, the Core i5-14600KF offers strong performance for both gaming and modeling. If you want DDR5, AMD’s AM5 platform is the better long-term option, with something like a Ryzen 5 9600X or faster. Just keep in mind that AM5, DDR5 memory, and a suitable motherboard can make the budget tight.
With a $1,000–$1,200 ceiling and 32GB of RAM, you may need to use an older DDR4 platform to leave enough money for the graphics card. A typical budget can disappear quickly: roughly $460 for an RX 9060 XT, $200 for 32GB of memory, $180 for a Core i5-14400, and around $130 for a 1TB NVMe SSD, before adding the motherboard, power supply, case, and cooling.
A Ryzen 5 system with a mid-range GeForce card should handle gaming and civil engineering software comfortably.
