How can I turn an MP4 into a DVD that a movie theater can play?

I recently earned my bachelor's degree as an adult learner, at the same time my daughter graduated high school and my niece finished junior high. To celebrate, I'm hosting a private movie-theater screening for family and friends and made a film for the occasion. The theater requires the movie on a physical DVD rather than streamed or played from a laptop. I bought an external USB DVD-RW drive and blank discs, but I haven't been able to create a working disc from either my Windows 11 laptop or desktop. I learned that simply copying the MP4 file probably isn't enough and that I need DVD-authoring software. I tried finding software online, including DVDStyler, but I'm concerned about downloading something unsafe. What is the proper process for converting and burning the video, and are there reputable services that could do it quickly?

First ask the theater exactly what they require. Some venues mean a DVD-Video disc that plays in a standalone player, while others may accept a data DVD containing an MP4 or prefer a different format entirely. A data disc with the MP4 copied onto it will not work in every DVD player, so don’t assume that is enough. If they truly require DVD-Video, use an authoring program, choose the correct video standard for your region, burn at a moderate speed, and verify the disc on a standalone player.

I’ll confirm the format with the theater and test the disc before the screening. The external drive is labeled DVD-RW, so it should be capable of burning DVDs rather than being only a reader.

If you’re short on time, look for a local video-transfer, duplication, or professional DVD-authoring shop. Tell them you need a playable DVD-Video disc from an MP4 and provide the video’s length and resolution. A local production or print shop may be able to do it faster than a large mail-in service. Bring a backup copy of the MP4 and, if possible, request two tested discs.

Make sure the service is creating a DVD-Video disc, not merely placing the MP4 file on a blank DVD. Those are different things and are handled differently by players.

You need DVD-authoring software, not just a program that copies files to a disc. The software converts the MP4 into the format used by DVD-Video—normally MPEG-2 at standard-definition resolution—then creates the disc structure and burns it. DVDStyler can do this and doesn’t require a menu if you want the simplest setup. Download it only from a reputable official source, scan the installer, and avoid unofficial download mirrors. Test the finished disc on a normal DVD player before the event.

Authoring can take a while because the video may need to be re-encoded, especially if it’s HD. The result may also look less sharp than the original MP4 because DVD-Video is limited to standard definition.
