I have an older Android phone that I've used since 2021 mainly for archived files and a few apps. At some point, Google-related apps stopped working correctly. Google Play reports that there is no internet connection or that I'm signed out, even though the phone has a stable connection and my Google account works on another device. I also can't browse app descriptions or reviews. YouTube won't let me sign in or watch videos, Google Translate shows an error whenever I try to translate something, and Google Maps has occasionally failed to detect my location or required me to sign in for directions. The browser and non-Google apps work normally, and restarting the phone didn't help. My accounts are active and I know the passwords. What troubleshooting steps can I try without risking my notes, photos, or other files?

If the phone is running an old Android version, Google Play services may no longer support it properly. Check the phone’s Android version and install the latest official system update available for that model. A factory reset may help, but it should be a last resort after making a complete backup and confirming that your notes and photos are actually included. Installing a custom ROM with Google apps is another possible route, but it’s advanced, can erase the device, and may cause compatibility or security problems, so it isn’t a good first fix for someone unfamiliar with the process.
Don’t delete your files as a first step. Back up your photos, notes, and anything important before changing system settings. Then check that the date and time are set automatically, since an incorrect clock can break Google sign-ins and certificates. Also make sure the phone has enough storage and that Android System WebView, Google Play services, Google Play Store, and Google Services Framework are enabled and updated if updates are available. You can safely clear the cache for those Google components, restart the phone, and try signing in again. Clearing storage or removing your Google account is more disruptive, so back up first and use those only if the cache steps fail.
I’m not familiar with custom ROMs or Google app packages, so I’d prefer to try the safer checks and backup steps first.
