I'm helping a friend build a mid-range 1440p PC for around $1700, and I need some advice on good GPUs that fit a budget of about $650. Right now, our build includes an AMD 7800X3D, an Arctic Freezer III 360 AIO, an MSI B650 WiFi motherboard, 32GB of Vengeance RAM, a 1TB970 Pro SSD, and a Corsair RM850x PSU. Here are the options I've found so far:
- 5070 for around $600: Seems like a solid choice since it's not that far above MSRP.
- 5070 Ti at about $800: A bit too pricey.
- 9070 XT costing around $750: Performs worse than the 5070 Ti in some games.
- 9070 for about $660: Similar performance issues to the 9070 XT.
Are there any other GPUs I should consider, and where might I find them for a good price? Also, I'm new to Reddit, so thanks for your help!

Have you looked into used GPUs locally? Sometimes, folks offload their cards for various reasons, and you might snag a deal after others regret their purchases. Just be cautious and check places like Facebook Marketplace or eBay.
Honestly, spending only $650 on a GPU for a $1700 build might not be the best idea. I suggest checking out the 7800 XT or the 7900 XT if you can stretch your budget a bit. They offer good performance, just be cautious with the 5070, as it might feel underwhelming for a higher-tier system.
What’s wrong with that?
You should easily be able to route your budget to fit a 5070 Ti or even consider a 9070 XT, especially since you have some budget wiggle room with other parts like the CPU and motherboard. Don’t skimp on the GPU because it’s the most crucial part for gaming!
Wait, which $200 CPU are you suggesting?
Your best bet in this price range is the 5070. Yes, the 12GB of VRAM is a bit of a downside, but with your current specs, finding something better under $650 is really tough these days. While the 5070 Ti is a great option if it drops to around $750, the 5070 should suffice for now.
Totally agree! I wish I could fit a 5070 Ti into my budget too, but prices are just insane right now.
If you're planning a $1700 build, you might want to consider cutting costs on your cooler. The Thermalright Peerless Assassin for around $40 could be a better choice than the pricey 360mm AIO. This way, you could invest more into a 5070 Ti, which is currently the best option available at this price. The 9070 series would only be worth it if they’re closer to MSRP, like $600. Plus, keep in mind that the 5070 may not hold up in 2025 due to limited VRAM.
Solid advice right here!
But the AIO is only about $80-90, so you're not saving that much by switching!
I’ve tried checking Facebook Marketplace and eBay, but no luck so far 🙁
