I reapplied my CPU thermal paste and switched off the power supply so the computer wouldn't accidentally start without its cooler. When I moved the switch on my 3.5-year-old Corsair RM1000x (2021) to the off position, I heard a popping sound that seemed more like an electrical arc than a normal click. The computer otherwise works perfectly. Is this something to worry about, or can a PSU switch occasionally make this noise when powering down?

A single mechanical click is normal, but a noticeable snap or crackle that sounds like sparking shouldn’t be ignored. The switch can potentially arc as its contacts open, but it’s not worth risking expensive hardware or a safety issue. Stop using that PSU until it’s inspected, and contact the manufacturer or arrange a replacement/RMA.
That makes sense. I’ve opened a support case with the manufacturer, since I’d rather confirm it’s safe than keep using it and hope the noise is normal.
