I recently launched a website featuring a 3D globe that visualizes heavy-industry emissions and public registry data. The main experience is currently open to everyone, but I'm wondering whether user signups would make sense for this type of tool. If accounts are worthwhile, what features would justify them and what would be a low-friction way to introduce them?

If the site already works well without accounts, there’s no need to require registration just for the sake of it. Keep the public data and globe freely accessible, and only add signups when users need features that depend on an identity.
For this kind of public visualization, avoid putting a login wall in front of the core experience. Consider optional accounts later for saved views, watchlists, alerts, annotations, custom filters, or export history. If you mainly want to test demand right now, a lightweight “notify me about updates” signup would create much less friction than a full account system.

I was thinking about personalization—for example, letting someone follow a particular flight path or receive updates about a specific area—but I’m still deciding whether that’s useful enough.
