Will deleting a Teams message prevent the recipient from receiving its email notification?

I work as a systems administrator, but I don't manage our Microsoft 365 backend. I sent someone a private Teams message, and it remained visible in their chat for about an hour before I deleted it. Our organization sends email notifications for missed Teams messages, so I'm wondering whether the recipient could still receive an email containing the message even after it was deleted in Teams. Is the message removed from the notification too, or can the email still include the original text?

If you have access to the Microsoft 365 mail system, message-trace or mail logs could show whether a notification email was sent. Since you don’t administer that environment, the Microsoft 365 administrator would need to check.

Yes, the email notification may still arrive if it was generated before the message was deleted. Deleting the message removes it from the Teams chat, but it generally can’t retract an email notification that has already been sent.

Deleting the Teams message doesn’t necessarily remove all retained copies. Depending on your organization’s retention, compliance, or eDiscovery policies, the message could still be discoverable in Microsoft Purview even though it no longer appears in the chat.

It depends on the recipient’s notification settings and timing. Some organizations send immediate notifications, while others delay them for a set period, so there’s no guarantee whether an email preview was created during that hour.

I probably should have deleted it sooner, but that helps clarify the timing issue. Thanks.
