I bought my Samsung Galaxy S24 in December 2024 after switching from an older iPhone whose battery health had dropped to 75%. I expected the S24's battery to last much longer, but it has struggled to last a full day since I first took it out of the box. My mom bought the same model around the same time and noticed similar battery life. I keep the brightness low and don't use the phone constantly, although I do listen to music through headphones during school. The settings show a 4,000 mAh capacity. Should I replace the battery, or could an app or background process be causing the drain?

The S24’s listed 4,000 mAh capacity is normal. With moderate use, many people still have roughly 40% left at night, but heavy use can drain it much faster. Listening to music alone usually shouldn’t cause extreme drain, so check background apps and battery usage first.
My S24 Ultra lasts through the day even when I limit charging to about 75%, but background processes make a noticeable difference. If the diagnostic reports the battery is healthy, look for apps constantly running in the background rather than replacing the battery immediately.
Run Samsung’s built-in battery diagnostic before paying for a replacement. In the Samsung Members app, open Support, choose Phone Diagnostics, and run the Battery status test. That should help show whether the battery itself is unhealthy.
A new battery probably shouldn’t be your first step, especially since the problem existed from day one. Check Settings > Battery and device care to see which apps are using the most power, then remove or restrict apps you don’t use. Background activity, weak signal, and certain apps can drain the battery even when the screen is off.

I couldn’t immediately tell what was using the power, but I do have around twenty apps I haven’t used in a month. I’m going to remove them and see whether that helps.
