I earned a college degree focused on UI/UX design and programming, and I genuinely enjoy both design and coding. Since graduating, though, I've lost confidence in pursuing either as a career or even as a hobby. I'm especially discouraged by AI tools and website builders making web design and development feel less valuable. I currently work a minimum-wage job I dislike and feel overwhelmed by all the interests I want to explore, including art, graphic design, reading, coding, web development, game development, and writing. I don't want to abandon everything or feel like my years in school were wasted. How can I decide what to focus on and start using these skills again?

Your skills aren’t obsolete just because the tools have changed. AI and site builders can produce quick results, but they don’t replace strong judgment, user research, accessibility knowledge, visual hierarchy, brand consistency, or the ability to work within real-world constraints. Poor interfaces can exclude users and even create legal problems. Instead of competing with the tools, learn to use them while focusing on the parts that require human judgment and quality control. As generic designs become easier to generate, thoughtful and distinctive work may become even more valuable.
Burnout after graduation is surprisingly common. Finishing years of classes, assignments, and deadlines can make something you once loved feel like another obligation. It may help to take a deliberate break from design and coding, then return through a tiny project with no grades, clients, or career pressure. You don’t have to decide your entire future right now—try one small thing and see what brings back your curiosity.
