Why Am I Getting Almost No Leads Despite Ranking Highly on Google Maps?

I run a web design business in one of the largest cities in the United States. My Google Business Profile appears in the top results—often positions one through three—for searches related to web design in my city, and I have more than 50 reviews from local businesses. Despite that visibility, I've received almost no calls over the past few months. Has anyone else noticed the same thing? Is local Google visibility producing fewer leads now, or should I focus more on paid ads and direct outreach? Could demand for web design simply be slowing down?

First, verify that the ranking is real rather than based on your own search history, location, or personalization. Search results can vary a lot between users. Check your Business Profile insights and look at impressions, website visits, messages, and calls from other people before concluding that the listing has stopped working.

A useful test is checking the listing from different locations or in an incognito window, but the performance data in the profile is more meaningful than manually searching for yourself.

Compare impressions with actions. If impressions are steady but calls have fallen, the issue may be lower intent rather than your ranking. More searches are being answered directly in search results, AI summaries, or marketplaces, so fewer people reach out to individual agencies. A strong profile still helps, but it may need to be combined with ads, partnerships, and targeted outbound outreach.

Organic results are pushed farther down by sponsored listings, map features, directories, and other search elements. I wouldn’t assume web design is no longer in demand, but relying on a single local listing is riskier than it used to be. Track which queries generate leads and diversify your acquisition channels.

Being number one doesn’t automatically mean you’ll get calls. Make sure you’re actually appearing in the local three-pack for the searches that have buying intent, not just broad or personalized searches. If you’re outside the top three, many people may never see the listing.
