I'm an adult Windows user interested in trying Linux because Windows 11 feels slow on my computer. I'd like something beginner-friendly, reasonably fast, and familiar enough that the transition from Windows isn't overwhelming. Which distribution and desktop environment would you recommend? I'm also open to testing Linux before installing it permanently.

Try not to get stuck searching for the perfect distribution. The differences are often less important than the desktop environment and the software you need. Start with a mainstream option such as Mint or Fedora KDE, give it a little time, and check whether the programs and games you use are supported. If you still need Windows-only software, keeping Windows on a separate drive or using dual boot can be useful, but make backups before changing partitions.
Before installing anything, create a bootable USB and run the distribution in live mode. That lets you test the desktop, Wi-Fi, graphics, sound, and other hardware without changing your current installation. A multiboot tool such as Ventoy can hold several installer images on one USB drive, so you can compare Mint, Zorin, Fedora KDE, or others.
Fedora with the KDE Plasma desktop is worth considering if you want something more modern and customizable. KDE behaves in a fairly Windows-like way, but you can change nearly everything about the interface. It’s also a strong option for gaming and features tools such as KDE Connect for working with an Android phone. Just keep in mind that no Linux system will behave exactly like Windows.
Linux Mint, especially the Cinnamon edition, is probably the safest starting point. It’s stable, easy to install, familiar to Windows users, and most everyday tasks can be handled without opening a terminal. It may not look flashy by default, but it generally just works. Zorin OS is another good choice if matching Windows visually is your main priority.
The desktop environment matters almost as much as the distribution. KDE is modern and flexible, while Xfce has a simpler, more traditional feel and runs well on older hardware.
