My GPU’s PCIe retention clip broke and the PC won’t boot—do I need a new motherboard?

The plastic locking tab that holds my graphics card in the motherboard's PCIe slot has broken. The PC powers on and the graphics card lights up, but the motherboard stays dark and the system does not boot. The slot itself may still be intact, although the RTX 4070 Ti Super is large and sags noticeably. I also have a second PCIe slot, but I'm not sure whether it is suitable for the card. Is the motherboard likely ruined, or is there a cheaper way to test and secure the GPU?

There’s an important difference between a broken locking tab and a broken PCIe connector. If the slot housing is cracked, contacts are bent, or the card has pulled upward enough to lose contact, stop powering it on and inspect it closely. A photo of the slot and card edge would help identify the damage. If the second slot also fails, test with another graphics card or have a repair shop check the motherboard before buying a replacement.

If only the small retention clip broke and the PCIe slot isn’t cracked, the motherboard usually doesn’t need replacement. The clip mainly keeps the card from sliding out. Reseat the GPU carefully, make sure it is fully inserted, and support the sagging end with a proper GPU support bracket. Don’t rely on a loose plastic pin or anything that could move into the fans or contacts. Also check the power connectors and try booting with the card held firmly in place.

Try the other full-length PCIe slot if your motherboard has one. It may run at fewer lanes or a lower speed, but it should be good enough to determine whether the graphics card works. Check the motherboard manual first, and make sure the large card physically fits without blocking anything important. If it works there, the original slot may be damaged or the card may not have been making proper contact.
