I'm planning to build a gaming PC for my husband as a combined birthday and Christmas gift. I'm still saving for the parts, so I want to make sure everything is compatible and that I'm spending the money wisely. His current computer struggles with newer game updates, and he mainly plays Marvel Rivals and Overwatch.
I'd like the new system to be fast and remain capable for several years, with a maximum budget of roughly $2,500–$3,000. The current parts list comes to about $2,850:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
- CPU cooler: PCCOOLER CPS GT360M ARGB Display 360mm AIO
- Graphics card: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Gaming OC 16GB
- Storage: Samsung 990 Pro 1TB NVMe SSD
- Memory: G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB DDR5-6000, 32GB (2x16GB)
- Power supply: MSI MPG A850GS PCIe 5, 850W, 80+ Gold
- Case: HYTE Y70
I initially forgot to choose a motherboard, so I'd especially appreciate recommendations for a reliable AM5 motherboard that works well with these parts. I'm also open to suggestions for better-value alternatives or parts I may have overlooked. There isn't a nearby Micro Center; the closest one is about three to four hours away.

The main missing part is a motherboard. Look for a reputable B650E, B850, or similar AM5 board with the features you actually need, such as Wi-Fi, enough M.2 slots, and the rear USB connections you want. A midrange board from MSI, Gigabyte, ASUS, or ASRock should be plenty; there’s no need to spend heavily on an enthusiast model for a gaming build. Also confirm that the case supports the 360mm radiator in the location where you plan to mount it, and check the graphics card’s length and thickness against the HYTE Y70’s clearance.
For a gaming-only system, the 9800X3D is excellent, but it may be more CPU than he needs for these games. A Ryzen 7 7800X3D or one of the newer lower-cost X3D chips could free up money for a larger SSD or other upgrades without giving up much gaming performance. The RTX 5070 Ti is a reasonable choice, although a Radeon RX 9070 XT may offer stronger price-to-performance depending on current pricing. I’d also compare SSD prices, since the Samsung 990 Pro is very fast but often costs more than competing drives that perform similarly in games.
