Is the Arctic Freezer 36 enough for a Ryzen 7 5800X3D?

I'm currently using a Ryzen 7 5700X with the AMD stock cooler. It usually runs around 45–85°C, but it occasionally gets too hot. I'm planning to upgrade to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D, which can run warmer, and I'd like an affordable cooler that can handle it. Would the Arctic Freezer 36 be sufficient, or are there better budget options?

You can also reduce the processor’s PPT limit or use the 5800X3D’s curve optimizer undervolt. That lowers power consumption and temperatures while retaining most of the performance, though a capable air cooler is still recommended.

The Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE or Phantom Spirit 120 are popular inexpensive choices because their dual-tower designs provide a lot of cooling for the price. They’re excellent alternatives if they’re available at a similar price where you live.

Is the Peerless Assassin actually better than the Arctic Freezer 36, or is it mainly just another good option?

The 5800X3D can run well with a midrange air cooler. With a Noctua NH-D15 and a -30 all-core undervolt, one user reported maximum-load temperatures around 65–68°C, but you don’t need to spend that much—the Arctic Freezer 36 should be enough for a budget build.

The Arctic Freezer 36 should be perfectly adequate for the 5800X3D, assuming your case has decent airflow. It’s a solid budget cooler and should be a major improvement over the stock cooler.

The Peerless Assassin, Phantom Spirit, Frost Spirit, and DeepCool AK620 can all handle the 5800X3D. Use decent thermal paste and check that the cooler fits your case and doesn’t interfere with your RAM or side panel.
