I'm building my first PC in the next few days and have never used a gaming computer before. I'm considering a Ryzen 5 5500 paired with an RX 5500 XT 8GB, but my budget is very tight and the total parts cost is around $180 if possible. I mainly want smooth everyday use and to play games such as GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Crimson Desert. Is this combination balanced, or would I be better off changing the processor or graphics card?

The Ryzen 5 5500 is a reasonable match for the RX 5500 XT, so the processor should not hold that graphics card back much. The bigger issue is that the 5500 XT is an older, relatively weak GPU. GTA V should be comfortable, and RDR2 can be playable at 1080p with settings adjusted, but newer and demanding games such as Crimson Desert may require low settings, upscaling, or reduced resolution. Look for benchmarks using the exact game and resolution you plan to play at.
At this price point, used parts are probably worth considering. Depending on local prices, a used RX 580 8GB, GTX 1660, RX 5600 XT, or similar card could offer better value, though condition and power requirements matter. Don’t spend $180 on an RX 5500 XT alone if that is your entire graphics-card budget without comparing other used options first.
