I'm planning my first desktop PC after using a Lenovo Legion 5 laptop with an RTX 3070 Ti and Ryzen 7 6800H. I'm especially unsure whether the parts are well balanced, whether the RTX 4080 is still a sensible choice compared with newer GPUs such as the RTX 5070 Ti or RTX 5080, and whether buying a similarly specced prebuilt would offer better value. Any advice on compatibility, unnecessary parts, or ways to save money would be appreciated.

You can skip the extra thermal paste if your CPU cooler already includes some or comes with it pre-applied. Also, I’d take a close look at the GPU choice: the RTX 4080 is from the previous generation, so it only makes sense if it’s significantly cheaper than newer cards. A reasonably priced RTX 5070 Ti or RTX 5080 may offer better value and longer-term support.
If you live near a Micro Center, check their prebuilt systems before committing to the custom build. You may be able to save roughly $600 on a similarly equipped PC, depending on the current deals and included components.

I originally picked the RTX 4080 because it appeared cheaper than the newer cards in the parts list. After checking again, I found an RTX 5070 Ti that costs over $400 less, so I’m going to compare that option more carefully.
