I'm running a Ryzen 7 5800X, an RTX 3070 8GB, and 16GB of DDR4-3200 CL22 memory in a 2x8GB configuration. I mainly play Valorant, CS2, and Fortnite at 1080p, where I'm often CPU-limited. The RAM seems slow by current gaming standards, and 16GB is starting to feel a little tight. Would I notice a meaningful improvement from switching to a faster 32GB DDR4 kit, or would simply adding another 16GB be the better move? I'm also considering saving for a full AM5 upgrade with a newer CPU and 32GB of DDR5, but I'm unsure whether that would be worth the much higher cost compared with improving my current AM4 system.

Since you play at 1080p and care about high frame rates, a CPU upgrade can matter more than it would at 1440p or 4K. An AM4 gaming CPU with extra cache could give your current motherboard a useful boost without requiring a new board and DDR5. Whether that is worth the price depends on how much your current 5800X struggles and what frame rates you are targeting.
I wouldn’t replace the whole platform just to move from DDR4 to DDR5 right now. Your 5800X and RTX 3070 are still capable, and DDR4-3200 is usable even if CL22 is relatively loose timing. If you want a sensible low-cost upgrade, get 32GB of compatible DDR4, ideally a 2x16GB kit with better timings, and keep the rest of the system.
For your system, capacity is probably the bigger concern than speed. A decent 32GB kit should help with newer games, background applications, and avoiding memory-related stutters. Faster DDR4 could improve minimum FPS a little in CPU-limited competitive games, but it probably won’t feel like a dramatic upgrade compared with going from 16GB to 32GB.
The best way to decide is to check memory usage, GPU usage, and CPU frame-time data while playing. If RAM usage is close to 16GB or the system starts paging, upgrade capacity first. If the GPU is not fully utilized and one or two CPU cores are limiting performance, a faster CPU may help. At 1440p, the difference between platforms will generally matter less because the RTX 3070 becomes the limiting part sooner.
I’m mostly trying to avoid spending a lot now if a full AM5 upgrade would make more sense later. I don’t have a direct comparison, so I’m not sure how much the RAM speed or a newer CPU would actually change my games.
