I recently found my mother's old iPhone 3, which contains irreplaceable photos of family members, including my late great-grandfather. I've been trying to transfer them for years, but the phone won't properly connect to my home Wi‑Fi or phone hotspot. Emailing the photos fails with a configuration error, and there's no SIM card available for sending them through messages. I also connected the phone to a newer Mac, but it kept asking me to unlock the device even though it was already unlocked and had no passcode. Finder created a large number of files with coded names, but I can't figure out how to access the photos. The pictures were never synced to iCloud either. Is there a reliable way to extract them without losing anything?

Try Apple’s Image Capture app on the Mac while the phone is connected by USB. It can sometimes import photos directly even when Finder doesn’t offer the usual photo options. Very old iPhones may not work with newer macOS versions, though, so an older Mac or older system could make a difference.
A dedicated iPhone transfer utility such as CopyTrans may be able to read the camera roll and export the images when Finder cannot. Check compatibility first, since older iPhone models and newer Macs are often a difficult combination.
I checked it, but the version available isn’t supported on my Mac. It looks like I may need an older computer or another operating system.
Another possibility is accessing the phone through Apple File Conduit, or AFC. A Linux computer, particularly one running Debian, can sometimes detect older iPhones through AFC and expose the photo folders directly. This is more technical, so make a backup or work from a copy if possible, and avoid changing or deleting anything on the phone.
I’m not familiar with AFC or Linux, but I’ll look into it. I’m mainly trying to find a method that reads the phone without risking the original photos.
I tried Image Capture on my newer Mac, but the phone doesn’t appear there either. I may need to find an older Mac to test it on.
