I'm planning to build a PC and am considering AM4 because the parts can be much cheaper, especially with current DDR5 prices. My main concern is future upgradeability: will choosing AM4 limit me too much later, or is it still a reliable and capable platform for gaming and everyday work?

The decision depends heavily on your target games, resolution, and performance goals. At 1440p or 4K, a strong AM4 processor can remain capable for a long time because the graphics card is often the limiting component. For high-refresh gaming, demanding future titles, productivity workloads, or local AI, the newer platform gives you more headroom. If you are building cheaply now, AM4 is fine; if you want the longest upgrade path, choose AM5.
AM4 can still be a very sensible budget option. A reasonably priced Ryzen 5700X or 5700X3D, 32GB of DDR4, and a suitable motherboard can provide strong gaming performance for years. You could put the savings toward a better graphics card, which is often more important for higher-resolution gaming. Just go in knowing that the next major upgrade will probably be a platform replacement rather than a drop-in CPU upgrade.
AM4 is still reliable and can deliver excellent performance, especially with CPUs like the Ryzen 5700X3D, 5800X3D, or 5950X. However, the platform is effectively finished for new CPU releases. You can still upgrade the graphics card, storage, and other components, but a future CPU upgrade would eventually require moving to a new motherboard and memory standard.
