My PC, purchased around 2019 or 2020, worked reliably until the CPU cooler failed in March. I replaced it with a cooler from the system manufacturer, and ever since then the computer has randomly frozen and restarted. It can happen while watching a movie, when the system is idle, or during normal work. Sometimes it runs for days or even a week without problems, but other times it crashes two to four times in a single day. I've replaced the SSD, updated the BIOS to the 2025 F19 version, reinstalled chipset and other drivers, run stress tests, and tried several other troubleshooting steps. The manufacturer checked the event logs and found multiple errors, suggesting a newer BIOS update or sending the PC in for repair. I work from home, so I'm trying to identify anything else I can safely check first. Could the cooler installation, thermal contact, memory settings, or another hardware issue be causing these freezes and restarts?

Temporarily disable XMP or EXPO in the BIOS and run the memory at its default settings. These profiles overclock the RAM, and a system that was previously stable can become unreliable after a BIOS change or hardware work. If the crashes stop with the profile disabled, either leave it off or manually reduce the memory speed and test again.
Run MemTest86 from a bootable USB drive and let it complete several passes, preferably overnight. Windows memory tests can miss intermittent RAM faults. If errors appear, test each memory stick separately and make sure the modules are installed in the recommended slots.
MemTest86 is a separate diagnostic tool that boots before Windows and checks the memory directly. It’s useful here because faulty or unstable RAM can cause freezes and automatic restarts without an obvious error message.
Double-check the cooler installation, especially whether the protective plastic film was removed from the contact plate before it was mounted. Also confirm that the cooler is firmly secured, the fan or pump is connected to the correct header, and the CPU has an appropriate layer of thermal paste. Poor thermal contact can cause instability, although checking temperatures during idle and under load would help confirm whether overheating is involved.
I’m fairly sure I removed the film, but I’ll take the cooler off and verify everything. The inconsistent timing made me unsure whether an installation problem could really cause crashes days apart.
I’ll try running without XMP or EXPO and see whether the crashes stop. If it becomes stable, that should narrow the problem down to memory settings rather than Windows or the SSD.
