Is a degree required to become employable, or can someone who is self-taught build enough knowledge and practical experience to land a reasonably well-paying role? If self-study is viable, which technical areas should I prioritize, and should I first target a different entry-level role such as systems administration, networking, QA, or software development?

Self-study is possible, but it has a blind spot: without working alongside experienced people, it’s easy to miss operational practices, security concerns, and failure scenarios. Try to get hands-on experience through a junior technical role, volunteering, internships, or serious personal projects. The DevOps title can be the long-term destination rather than the first job.
A degree can help you get past automated hiring filters, but it isn’t the only route. Self-taught candidates can get hired if they can demonstrate practical skills and explain what they built, broke, and fixed. The important thing is to avoid collecting tool names without understanding the fundamentals. Start with Linux, networking, security basics, scripting, Git, and troubleshooting before piling on cloud platforms and orchestration tools.
DevOps usually isn’t an entry-level specialty. It combines software development with systems and operations work, so most people build experience in one or both areas first. A more realistic starting point might be junior systems administration, network engineering, QA automation, cloud support, or software development. From there, you can gradually take on deployment, infrastructure, and automation responsibilities.
