Is the RTX 5070 worth choosing over the 16GB RTX 5060 Ti for 1440p gaming?

I'm buying my sibling a new graphics card as a birthday gift to replace an RTX 2060 6GB. I'm comparing a $750 RTX 5060 Ti 16GB with an $850 RTX 5070 12GB. The PC will be used with a new 1440p monitor and still has DDR4 memory. Is the extra performance of the RTX 5070 worth giving up 4GB of VRAM, or would the 16GB card be a better long-term choice? I'm also open to AMD if there's a better-value option, though I've heard concerns about driver stability and would like features such as DLSS or frame generation if they matter.

The prices make both Nvidia options difficult to recommend. An RX 9070 or RX 9070 XT often costs less while offering more VRAM and performance comparable to or better than the RTX 5070. Unless the build specifically needs CUDA, Nvidia’s software features, or particularly strong ray tracing, the 9070 XT is likely the better value.

AMD’s upscaling and frame-generation features are worth considering too, although Nvidia can still be preferable if DLSS or CUDA is important for the owner’s games and applications.

At 1440p, 12GB is still a reasonable amount of VRAM, especially on a newer card with high memory bandwidth. The RTX 5070 should be a noticeable upgrade from the RTX 2060 and is the sensible pick if you want to stay with Nvidia. DDR4 itself shouldn’t be a major issue unless the system has a particularly weak processor or very little system RAM.

The upgrade from an RTX 2060 will be substantial either way, so the recipient may not notice a dramatic difference between these two cards unless they use a high-refresh-rate 1440p display. It may also be worth checking whether the computer has at least 32GB of system memory, since increasing that from 12GB or 16GB could improve overall smoothness more than the VRAM difference in many games.

I wouldn’t pay $750 for an RTX 5060 Ti 16GB. That price is far above where it makes sense, and the extra memory doesn’t compensate for its lower performance. If the available RX 9070 XT is around $675–$750, I’d buy that instead; otherwise, choose the RTX 5070 over the 5060 Ti if Nvidia is required.

Between those two Nvidia cards, I’d choose the RTX 5070. It’s roughly 25–30% faster than the RTX 5060 Ti, and 12GB should generally be sufficient for 1440p gaming today. You can always reduce texture quality slightly in the few games that exceed the available VRAM, while the extra performance can’t be recovered on the 5060 Ti.

The 16GB model makes more sense for local AI or certain productivity workloads, but for normal 1440p gaming the faster card is usually the better choice.
