The plastic back cover of my laptop display lid is cracked near the left hinge. The display panel itself seems fine, but the damaged area can be pressed back into place and then pops up again when I open the lid. I'm concerned that the loose cover or hinge could put extra strain on the screen, display cable, camera wiring, or Wi‑Fi antenna cables. I've handled repairs before, including replacing a Wi‑Fi chip, installing an SSD, and changing buttons on handheld consoles. Is replacing just the outer lid cover a reasonable DIY repair, or would it be safer to have a professional do it? I'm trying to avoid the cost of professional service if possible.

As a temporary measure, you could secure the cracked area with a small amount of suitable adhesive, but don’t let glue get into the hinge or onto any cables. The hinge may be binding or pulling away from its mount, so avoid repeatedly opening and closing the lid until you can inspect it. Replacement is generally better than relying on glue, especially if the hinge itself is too tight.
That sounds reasonable as a short-term solution. Be especially careful around the hinge and any display, camera, or antenna wiring when opening the lid.
I may use glue temporarily to reduce the strain, but I’d prefer to replace the cover if that part is available. I wasn’t sure how difficult it would be to replace only the plastic shell.
