Should I upgrade my GPU or move from AM4 to AM5?

Before buying anything, check GPU usage while playing at an uncapped frame rate. If the GPU is sitting near 100% usage, a faster graphics card should help. Also check your power supply’s total wattage and available PCIe cables; the lack of a native 12VHPWR connector does not automatically mean it must be replaced, since many cards include suitable adapters. A newer midrange card with 16GB of VRAM could be a sensible step up, and a 1440p monitor would let you take better advantage of it.

The graphics card is the obvious performance upgrade. The 5700X and 32GB of memory are still perfectly capable for gaming, while the RTX 3060 is more likely to be the limiting component.

I’d stay on AM4 unless you have a specific CPU-related limitation. If you want to extend the life of the platform, a Ryzen 7 5800X3D-class upgrade can improve gaming performance without replacing the motherboard and memory. Otherwise, put the budget toward the GPU first.

A lower-power graphics card may be worth considering if you want to avoid replacing the PSU. Some newer cards use a single standard eight-pin connector and around 160W, while still offering a substantial improvement over the RTX 3060. Just verify the exact card’s power requirements and your PSU’s age and quality before deciding.

AM5 makes more sense as a complete rebuild rather than a small upgrade. You would need a new motherboard and DDR5 memory in addition to the processor, so it is a much larger expense. Consider it if you need a major CPU upgrade or want a longer-term platform, but for a system centered around an RTX 3060, the GPU is likely the better first move.
