Is switching to an AMD graphics card a bad idea with a hardware G-SYNC monitor?

I currently have an RTX 2070 Super, but rising graphics card prices have me considering AMD for my next upgrade. My monitor is an ASUS PG279QE with hardware-based G-SYNC, and I understand it may not support FreeSync or Adaptive-Sync. Would switching to an AMD card mean giving up an important feature or noticeably worse gaming experience, or are the savings and performance worth considering? Has anyone used an AMD GPU with this kind of monitor?

For many people, this is a minor issue rather than a deal-breaker. You can cap the frame rate slightly below the monitor's refresh rate, and if performance stays consistent, tearing may be barely noticeable. Whether G-SYNC is worth keeping is mostly about how sensitive you are to occasional tearing or uneven frame pacing.

People have switched from NVIDIA to AMD while keeping G-SYNC displays and reported no obvious problems in practice, especially when games run close to the monitor's refresh rate. Still, that is different from having VRR support: the AMD card will not provide the same adaptive-sync behavior on this particular monitor.

The exact monitor matters here. The PG279QE uses a hardware G-SYNC module and generally does not support FreeSync, so an AMD card probably cannot use the monitor's variable refresh feature. That does not make the card unusable, but you would lose native VRR unless you rely on an FPS cap or another workaround.

Some newer monitors labeled G-SYNC Compatible also work with AMD through FreeSync, but this model is one of the older hardware-G-SYNC designs. Check the monitor specifications rather than assuming every G-SYNC display supports both standards.
