Acer Nitro 5 Shows a Black Screen After Enabling Discrete GPU Only

The Predator software may expose options that are not fully compatible with every Nitro 5 model. Discrete-only mode relies on the laptop’s display multiplexer and firmware supporting a direct connection to the Nvidia GPU, so an unsupported model or outdated BIOS can result in a black screen. Avoid repeatedly forcing the setting, and once the system starts again, update the BIOS and graphics drivers using files intended specifically for your Nitro 5 model.

If it eventually starts by itself, that may mean the GPU switching state or embedded controller reset after the laptop was left powered off. I’d still switch the setting back to automatic graphics mode and avoid using the discrete-only option unless Acer’s documentation confirms that your exact model supports it.

This can happen when forcing discrete-GPU mode on a laptop whose BIOS, graphics drivers, or display hardware do not fully support that setting. The system may actually be starting Windows, but the internal panel is not receiving a video signal. Try a full power reset first: shut it down, unplug the charger, disconnect USB devices, then hold the power button for 30–45 seconds. If the laptop has an emergency battery-reset pinhole, hold it with a paperclip for about 15 seconds, then leave the machine unplugged for several minutes before trying again. An external monitor or TV over HDMI can also help determine whether the laptop is working but sending video to the wrong output. If you regain access, change the graphics mode back to automatic or Optimus rather than discrete-only. A BIOS reset may be necessary if the setting remains stuck, but opening the laptop or removing internal components should only be done if you are comfortable with the risks.
