I recently bought a Radeon 9070 XT Hellhound for $650 and was considering a second GPU mainly for AI workloads. I found a Radeon 9070 GRE available for $408 with a reservation that expires soon. Some performance comparisons show the GRE can be significantly slower than the XT, so I'm unsure whether it's still a good value.
I'm trying to keep costs down and would likely use these cards for at least three years. Would the 9070 GRE still be worth $408 as a second GPU, or should I stick with the 9070 XT for now and wait for another affordable XT deal? I'm especially interested in how useful the GRE would be for local AI tools and model workloads.

It may also be worth comparing against a 16GB 9060 XT. Depending on the models you plan to run, having more VRAM could be more useful than the GRE’s additional raw performance, but compatibility with your AI software should be the deciding factor.
At $408, it looks like a very strong price-to-performance deal, especially if it includes a normal warranty and you can return it. The current GPU market makes that price difficult to beat.
The XT may already be enough for your AI needs. One owner mentioned running Qwen 3.6 and 3.8 27B models on a 9070 XT without trouble, although long-session stability and your exact setup still matter.
For gaming or local tools such as LM Studio and Hugging Face, the GRE should be quite useful. The bigger question is software support: a lot of AI software is still much better optimized for Nvidia, so AMD performance can vary considerably depending on the framework and model.
A practical option would be to use the GRE primarily for gaming and the XT for AI. That lets you separate workloads, but I’d only buy the GRE if you have a specific use for the extra GPU rather than expecting every AI application to scale well across both cards.
