Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Keep Disappearing on Windows 11

I opened an older laptop that had been unused for about two years, and both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth were missing. I've already checked Services, reset the network settings, run troubleshooters, inspected Device Manager, installed and updated drivers, and performed a factory reset that reinstalled Windows. A few times, both features came back and worked normally, but they disappeared again within minutes. What could be causing this, and how can I determine whether the problem is Windows, the BIOS, or the laptop's wireless hardware?

A laptop that sat unused for years could have a wireless card that is beginning to fail, especially if it works briefly and then cuts out as it warms up. If the live USB test also fails, try opening the laptop, reseating the wireless card and its antenna leads, and replacing the card if necessary. As a temporary workaround, an inexpensive USB Wi-Fi adapter can restore internet access, though it may not replace Bluetooth unless it supports it too.

A USB adapter is probably the quickest workaround while testing the internal hardware. Just check whether the model includes Bluetooth before buying.

Since both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth vanish together, the shared wireless card may be failing rather than this being two separate driver problems. Check that airplane mode or a laptop-specific wireless keyboard shortcut hasn’t been enabled, and look for a related setting in the BIOS. If the devices disappear from Device Manager entirely, that points more toward hardware or firmware than ordinary Windows networking.

The factory reset automatically reinstalled Windows, but the problem still returned afterward. I’ll check the BIOS and wireless shortcut next.

The best way to separate a Windows problem from a hardware problem is to boot from a Linux live USB. This runs without changing your installation. If Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are also missing there, the wireless card, antenna connections, or a BIOS setting is probably at fault. If they work normally in Linux, then the issue is specific to Windows drivers or configuration.
