What are the best upgrades for my RTX 3080 system before switching to a new platform?

My current prebuilt has an RTX 3080 10GB, an Intel i9-10850K, and 16GB of RAM. It is around five or six years old, and I'm starting to notice its age. I mostly play at 1440p.

I was considering building a new AM5 system with a Ryzen 5 9600X and an RX 9070 XT, but the build would cost roughly $2,100 after removing some of the extras, or about $2,700 with the features I originally wanted. That is more than I'd like to spend right now.

Would it make more sense to upgrade this system for another year or two? I was initially thinking about replacing the RTX 3080 with an RX 9070 XT, but I'm unsure whether the i9-10850K would hold the new GPU back. Should I prioritize a CPU and platform upgrade, add more RAM, or save up and move directly to AM5?

At 1440p, the best upgrade depends on which games and frame rates are giving you trouble. Adding another 16GB of RAM would be a relatively inexpensive improvement, especially for newer or memory-heavy games. A newer GPU would also give you more VRAM than the 3080’s 10GB, which can help in demanding titles. Without more details, though, the proposed new build may only provide around a 20–30% improvement in actual gaming performance.

I’d look at the CPU and memory before replacing the GPU. The 10850K is older, but it can still pair reasonably well with a stronger card at 1440p. Going to 32GB of RAM is probably the easiest first step. If you want a cheaper platform upgrade, a DDR4-compatible LGA1700 setup could be considered, though it would still be a temporary stopgap rather than a long-term upgrade.

One cost-cutting route would be a Core i7-14700K, a DDR4 LGA1700 motherboard, and another 16GB of DDR4. That could leave enough of the budget for an RX 9070 XT and potentially keep the total upgrade closer to $1,200 instead of over $2,000. AM4 is still usable, but it would not make much sense as a new build when AM5 is the current upgrade path.
