I'm moving to Berlin next week, and the drive will take about three hours. My PC has an RTX 5070 Ti, and I'm worried about the graphics card getting damaged during transport. I'm considering laying the computer on its side with the motherboard facing upward, placing it in a padded box, and using air cushions to limit movement inside the case. Is removing the graphics card necessary, or would careful packing be enough?

If you keep it installed, transport the case lying flat with the motherboard facing upward so the card isn’t hanging from the slot. Put the case in its original box with the foam inserts, or otherwise secure it so it can’t slide around. Don’t rely on loose padding while the case is standing upright.
For peace of mind, I’d remove the graphics card. A 5070 Ti is fairly heavy, and taking it out only adds a few minutes. If your CPU cooler is a large tower-style model, removing that as well can reduce stress on the motherboard. Pack both parts separately with proper padding.
That makes sense. I’m mostly trying to avoid damaging anything, so spending an extra few minutes removing the card is probably worth it.
A three-hour car ride usually won’t hurt a properly packed PC, and plenty of people transport their systems without removing anything. Still, road bumps and driving conditions matter, and larger modern graphics cards put more leverage on the slot. Since reinstalling it is simple, removing it is the safest option if replacing the card would be expensive.
I have the original box and some air cushions available. I’ll make sure everything is firmly supported and that the case stays on its side.
