I recently let my younger brother borrow my HP Envy x360, and when I got it back I noticed tiny white, dark gray, and light gray specks on the palm rest. I clean the laptop about every two weeks with a microfiber cloth and a soft brush, so I'm concerned that the exterior coating may be wearing down. The spots feel slightly raised or textured when I run my finger over them rather than being small dents. What could be causing this, and is there a safe way to clean or protect the surface?

What type of brush are you using? Even a brush that feels soft can gradually affect a laptop’s coating if it’s used often or with pressure.
You could test a slightly damp microfiber cloth with a small amount of mild soap made for electronics. A melamine sponge, often called a magic eraser, might remove stubborn residue, but it’s mildly abrasive and can strip or dull the finish, so I’d avoid it unless you test an inconspicuous spot first and use almost no pressure.

It may be the outer finish starting to wear rather than ordinary dirt. A vinyl skin or protective wrap could help prevent the area from getting worse, although I’d try to identify whether the specks are residue before covering them.
It’s a large, fluffy brush that looks similar to a makeup brush, and it doesn’t seem abrasive, but I’m not sure what material it’s made from.
