My current setup is a Ryzen 7 5800X3D on AM4, an RTX 3080, 32GB of DDR4 memory, and an Asus TUF VG27AQL1 running at 1440p and 170Hz. I also have a PS5 Pro that I could connect to a new display. I'm considering either upgrading the graphics card to an RX 9070 XT or buying a 32-inch 4K 240Hz OLED monitor, such as the XG32UCWG. I mainly play AAA single-player games, RPGs, story-driven titles, and open-world games rather than competitive esports. Would the 5800X3D significantly bottleneck the 9070 XT, especially at 1440p or 4K? If I can only make one purchase, which would provide the bigger real-world improvement? I'm interested in 4K for image quality and PS5 Pro use, but I'm concerned about the performance cost and whether 4K is genuinely a good form of future-proofing. I'd also appreciate suggestions for other upgrade paths that make sense for this system.

A 4K OLED makes sense if you also want a premium display for the PS5 Pro, but 4K isn’t really future-proofing by itself. The higher resolution looks sharper, but it also makes every future GPU work harder, so you may need another graphics upgrade sooner. You can always run a 4K monitor at 1440p temporarily, but the image may not look as clean as native 1440p on your current display.
The 9070 XT is absolutely usable for 4K when paired with upscaling such as FSR in supported games. Quality or balanced modes can look very good at normal viewing distances, and you don’t necessarily need a flagship GPU to enjoy a 4K OLED. Just remember that a 240Hz panel is mostly wasted for your type of games unless you also play lighter titles; image quality, HDR, response time, and panel size matter more than reaching 240 FPS.
Upgrade the GPU first. The 5800X3D is still a strong gaming processor, and in modern AAA games at 4K the RX 9070 XT will usually be the limiting component rather than the CPU. At 1440p, you may see some CPU limits in particularly high-frame-rate or simulation-heavy games, but it shouldn’t be a major issue for your single-player library.
I’m running a 9070 XT with a 5800X and rarely see a meaningful bottleneck at 1440p. At 4K the workload shifts even more toward the GPU, so the 5800X3D should be perfectly reasonable.
The GPU is probably the better purchase right now. Graphics card pricing and availability can be less predictable, while OLED monitors have generally been getting cheaper. A 9070 XT should handle 4K well with sensible settings and upscaling, although demanding or poorly optimized games may still require compromises. If you keep the current 1440p screen, the new GPU should provide higher frame rates and more headroom immediately.
The card should manage around 60 FPS at 4K in many games on high settings, especially with upscaling. For a long-term 4K setup, though, don’t expect every new title to run natively at high refresh rates.
For the PS5 Pro, a 4K OLED is a compelling upgrade. For the PC alone, I’d wait on the monitor and buy the GPU first, since newer OLED panels may be cheaper or offer better features later.
