I'm upgrading to AM5 mainly to maximize FPS in first-person shooters and racing games. I usually play at low settings and want to get close to 240 FPS in as many games as possible, though I also play more demanding titles such as Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 and 007 at higher settings. My current system has a Ryzen 7 5800X and an RTX 5070 Ti, so I'll need a new motherboard, RAM, and CPU cooler as part of the upgrade. Is the Ryzen 7 9800X3D worth the extra cost over the 7800X3D, or would the money be better spent on additional memory or a larger SSD?

The exact prices and games are more important than the CPU names. A 7800X3D should be plenty for most games, but neither chip guarantees 240 FPS in every title. Even a 9800X3D paired with a high-end graphics card can fall below 240 FPS in newer shooters unless settings are reduced substantially. For your 5070 Ti and low-setting FPS focus, the 9800X3D is reasonable if the upgrade cost fits your budget; otherwise, the 7800X3D is the better value and won’t feel slow for years.

The 7800X3D is still an excellent gaming processor and usually delivers roughly 90% or more of the 9800X3D’s performance, depending on the game. If the 9800X3D costs more than about $100 extra, I’d take the 7800X3D and put the savings toward a 2TB SSD or a solid 32GB DDR5-6000 CL30 kit. At 1440p, many games will still be limited by the GPU, especially when you raise the graphics settings.

For a fresh build, the 9800X3D is the faster choice and generally gives better high-refresh performance and 1% lows. Since you’re specifically targeting 240 FPS at low settings with a 5070 Ti, the extra CPU headroom can matter in competitive shooters and busy racing-game scenes. If the price gap is only around $50–$80, I’d choose the 9800X3D. It also tends to run cooler under load.

That makes sense. I’m mainly concerned with consistent high FPS rather than visual quality, so the better 1% lows are appealing.
