My current system has an i7-4770K, 32 GB of RAM, and one MSI GTX 1080. I normally play at 1440p and 75 Hz, and occasionally use a nearby 75-inch 4K TV for single-player games. I originally ran two GTX 1080s for 4K gaming, but that monitor died last year.
I still play mostly on weekends, but with several upcoming games I'd like a system that can handle modern titles comfortably without spending more than necessary. I'm in Canada, and buying either option would require a two-hour trip to a nearby city.
One possibility is buying an RTX 5080 for around $2,300 CAD and installing it in my current system, although I'm worried the old CPU and platform would bottleneck it badly. The other option is a complete prebuilt with an Ultra 275K, 32 GB of RAM, and an overclocked RTX 5070 Ti for about $4,200 CAD. I'm comfortable paying for either option, but I'm unsure whether the more expensive system would provide enough of an improvement to justify the extra cost. I've mostly used Nvidia cards and would prefer to stick with Nvidia, but I'm open to practical advice. Building my own PC probably isn't ideal because I tend to keep upgrading parts until the budget gets out of control. What would make the most sense for occasional 1440p and 4K gaming?

I wouldn’t spend $4,200 CAD on that particular prebuilt without checking its exact parts and pricing. A balanced modern gaming system with a current AMD X3D processor, 32 GB of DDR5, and a 5070 Ti-class GPU should cost less and perform similarly or better. The CPU matters, especially if you want high frame rates at 1440p, and the newer platform will give you a much better upgrade path.
A 5080 would be badly mismatched with the i7-4770K. That processor is more than a decade old, and the motherboard, PCIe platform, power supply, and memory compatibility could all become problems. You’d be paying for a high-end GPU while leaving a lot of its performance unused. If you want a modern high-end graphics card, replace the whole platform rather than upgrading only the GPU.
The most sensible choice is a complete replacement, but not necessarily the $4,200 machine. Look for a balanced system using a Ryzen X3D processor or another strong modern gaming CPU, 32 GB of DDR5, a quality power supply with the proper connector, and the strongest GPU that fits the remaining budget. For occasional gaming, spending several thousand dollars on a 5080 or 5090 is probably unnecessary unless you specifically want maximum settings at 4K.
Since you mainly play on weekends, consider lowering the GPU tier instead of buying a 5080 or 5090. A used or midrange modern GPU paired with a new CPU, motherboard, and memory could be plenty for 1440p and acceptable 4K gaming. You could also build the new platform first and reuse the GTX 1080 temporarily, then upgrade the graphics card later. That avoids wasting money on a flagship GPU that your current system cannot properly support.

The old system may technically run a newer card, but the CPU bottleneck would be severe once you move above roughly the midrange GPU class. At 4K the GPU usually matters more, but a 4770K can still cause major frame-time and minimum-FPS problems in newer games.
