I have a prebuilt PC with an Intel i3-10105F, GTX 1650, and 8GB of DDR4 RAM running Windows 11. It frequently freezes or crashes during ordinary tasks, even when I only have one application open. For example, I was using an app to configure another device when the entire computer locked up and I had to restart it manually. It doesn't happen every single time, but it happens often enough to be frustrating. I bought the computer a couple of years ago, and I realize the hardware was fairly modest even when it was new. What should I check first, and would upgrading the RAM likely help?

The system is on the low-end side, but those specifications alone shouldn’t normally cause complete freezes. First, back up any important files, then consider a clean Windows installation or full system reset. Also check for overheating, storage-drive errors, outdated drivers, and faulty memory before assuming the hardware is simply too slow.
Since the PC has been used for a few years, start with basic troubleshooting: monitor CPU and GPU temperatures, run Windows Memory Diagnostic or MemTest86, check the drive’s health, and reinstall the graphics and chipset drivers. If the problem began after years of normal use, failing RAM, storage, or a power-related issue is more likely than the processor simply being too weak.
It is an older, modest prebuilt, so upgrading to 16GB of RAM and replacing a slow or worn-out storage drive could improve everyday performance. However, don’t treat the specifications as the entire diagnosis—regular freezing during light tasks points to a software or hardware fault that should be tested first.
The 8GB of RAM is probably the easiest upgrade and could make Windows 11 feel much smoother. Move to 16GB, ideally as a matched dual-channel kit if your prebuilt supports it. That may reduce slowdowns and paging, although it won’t necessarily fix crashes caused by bad RAM, a failing drive, overheating, or corrupted system files.

I agree that 16GB would help, but running 8GB by itself shouldn’t make the computer hard-freeze constantly. I’d run a memory test and check the drive before buying parts.
