I'm considering replacing the motherboard in my mini-ITX system and would like some perspective on AM5's expected lifespan. I previously chose AM4 for future upgrade potential, but I'm disappointed that it now seems to be nearing the end of its upgrade path and don't want AM5 to follow the same pattern.
My current system has a Ryzen 7 3700X and an RX 9070, and it still performs well. RAM and SSD prices also seem unusually high compared with a few years ago, while CPUs and motherboards are more affordable. If I move to AM5, I know I'll need DDR5 memory as well. Is the platform upgrade worthwhile, and which AM5 mini-ITX motherboards would you recommend?

If your current build is performing well, there’s no urgent reason to replace it just for the motherboard. You could wait for memory and SSD prices to become more reasonable, or upgrade the CPU within AM4 first. If you do move to AM5, remember to budget for DDR5 and choose a compact board with the features and power delivery you actually need rather than paying extra for a premium model.
AMD has indicated that AM5 will be supported through at least 2029, and DDR5 should remain relevant for quite a while. That gives you a reasonable multi-year upgrade path, potentially including a later high-end Zen processor. If you need an upgrade now, AM5 is a much safer bet than waiting indefinitely for a supposedly perfect socket.
AM4 actually had an unusually long lifespan. It supported several CPU generations, and you can still upgrade a Ryzen 7 3700X to something like a 5800X3D for a major performance boost without replacing the motherboard. Compared with many competing platforms, that’s a very strong upgrade path.
No socket is truly future-proof, since platform changes are unavoidable. Still, AMD has generally supported its sockets for more generations than Intel has recently. AM5 is already established, and it should have several useful years ahead of it, so I wouldn’t avoid it purely out of fear that support will end suddenly.
