My RTX 3080 Ti is starting to struggle in some games, especially at 4K, and occasionally even at 1440p. I found an RTX 5080 for about $1,300, but that feels expensive. Would this be a worthwhile upgrade, or should I keep the 3080 Ti, wait for the next generation, or consider something like a 5070 Ti or RX 9070 XT?

The RX 9070 XT is probably the better value option, while the RTX 5070 Ti sits somewhere between it and the 5080. The 5080 is faster and has stronger ray-tracing and software features, but it may not deliver enough extra performance to justify paying roughly twice as much as a 9070 XT. If value matters, compare the actual prices in your area before deciding.
Before buying, try adjusting DLSS, ray-tracing, and other demanding settings on the 3080 Ti. DLSS Performance at 4K can look surprisingly good, and a few settings changes may buy you more time. Waiting for the next generation is also reasonable if your current card is still playable.
If you do upgrade, sell the 3080 Ti to offset the cost, but only spend the money if it will not interfere with bills, savings, or other priorities. Also consider keeping the old card as a backup if you have room; replacing a failed GPU during a supply shortage can be expensive.
At 4K, the RTX 5080 is a substantial upgrade and makes more sense, especially if you care about ray tracing, path tracing, DLSS, or high refresh rates. Even then, $1,300 is a lot, and you may still need to lower settings or use upscaling in demanding games. At 1440p, it is much harder to justify unless you have a very high-refresh monitor or specifically want Nvidia's features.
I mainly use mine for 4K high-refresh gaming, but it can definitely be overkill depending on the monitor and games you play.
Path tracing is one reason I was considering Nvidia, since I would like to experiment with it rather than only chase higher rasterized performance.
The simplest answer is to match the purchase to your monitor and budget. For 1440p, keep the 3080 Ti or look at a cheaper upgrade. For 4K, the 5080 is the most capable choice of these options, but $1,300 is still a premium for better settings and less reliance on aggressive upscaling. Waiting for prices or the next generation may be the smarter move if your games are still playable.
I would choose the 9070 XT over the 5070 Ti if both were similarly priced, unless Nvidia's ray tracing or DLSS features were especially important.
