The enclosure for my WD My Cloud failed, so I removed the 3.5-inch hard drive and connected it to my PC using a powered adapter. Windows detects several drive letters, from D: through I:, but opening any of them produces a message saying the drive must be formatted before it can be used. The drive was working before the enclosure failed, and I'm hoping to access the files without formatting or destroying the existing data. What's the safest way to recover or mount the data?

Don’t format the drive. A My Cloud disk may use Linux partitions and a filesystem that Windows cannot read normally, so seeing multiple drive letters and receiving a format prompt doesn’t necessarily mean the data is corrupted. Try accessing it from a Linux environment first. If the disk shows signs of failure or the data is irreplaceable, stop experimenting and use a professional recovery service.
If you want to attempt this yourself, work carefully and never write to the original disk. First, get another drive at least as large as the source and create a sector-by-sector clone using a Linux live USB and ddrescue. Then put the original somewhere safe and work only on the clone. TestDisk can try to identify or restore the partition structure. If that fails, PhotoRec can recover files by scanning the raw data, although filenames and folder structure may be lost and you’ll need enough space for the recovered files. If the drive is making unusual noises, disconnecting, or showing read errors, cloning or recovery software may make things worse, so a professional service is the safer option.
Since the drive is old and most of the contents are already backed up, I’m going to try the cloning and recovery approach rather than pay for professional recovery. I’ll make sure the original remains untouched while I work on the copy.
Hopefully it’s just an enclosure or compatibility issue—the drive was working before one of the enclosure ports broke. Most of the important files are backed up, so I’m willing to try recovering it myself.
