I'm considering using a Ryzen 7 9800X3D with an RTX 3060. I mostly play CPU-intensive or high-FPS games, and I don't currently have the budget for a stronger graphics card. Is this an unnecessary mismatch, or can the combination work well? I may upgrade the GPU later, but that probably won't happen soon.

There’s nothing technically wrong with the pairing. In most games, the RTX 3060 will be the limiting component, but that isn’t automatically a problem. The 9800X3D will have plenty of performance available, especially for high frame rates and CPU-heavy titles.
For competitive games or anything where you’re targeting high FPS at sensible settings, the 3060 can be perfectly adequate. In games such as World of Warcraft, the stronger CPU may matter more than having a high-end GPU. The result depends on the specific game, resolution, and graphics settings.
A CPU-heavy system is generally less troublesome than a system where the processor can’t keep up with the graphics card. Expect the RTX 3060 to reach its limit first in many modern games, but you can simply upgrade the GPU whenever your budget allows. The components aren’t permanently tied to each other.
If you’re buying both parts from scratch, a cheaper CPU paired with a much stronger GPU could usually provide better overall gaming performance, even at 1080p. However, if you already own the 3060 or plan to upgrade it later, using it with the 9800X3D is completely reasonable.
