I have a Western Digital external hard drive and need to replace its cable. The connector looks similar to Micro-USB, but I'm not sure whether it uses a standard Micro-USB cable or the wider USB 3.0 Micro-B connector commonly found on portable WD drives. Which cable should I buy, and are there any details I should check for compatibility or reliable power?

It most likely needs a USB 3.0 Micro-B to USB-A cable. This is the wider Micro-B connector used on many WD My Passport and Easystore drives. It has a regular Micro-USB-shaped section plus an additional wider section beside it, so a standard Micro-USB 2.0 cable may not fit properly or may not provide the expected data connection.
If the port is only the small, narrow Micro-USB shape, a standard Micro-USB data cable should work. However, the wider port seen on many external hard drives requires a USB 3.0 Micro-B cable. Make sure the cable supports data transfer, not just charging, and a reasonably short cable is generally best for stable power.
Check the drive’s port carefully before ordering—the USB 3.0 Micro-B connector is noticeably wider than a normal Micro-USB port.
